Nepal has experienced a shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as monthly demand rose to between 55,000 and 60,000 metric tons, exceeding the typical 48,000 tons. This surge followed the end of a temporary rationing scheme and was attributed by bottlers to consumer stockpiling and the temporary closure of refineries in India. While industry officials and consumer-rights activists criticized the government for poor demand forecasting and weak distribution management, the Nepal LP Gas Industry Association later urged consumers to avoid unnecessary stockpiling to resolve supply pressures. The Nepal Oil Corporation reported that LPG imports from India have increased by approximately 15 percent, with imports expected to reach around 55,000 metric tonnes for the month of Shrawan. As the shortage persists, lawmakers in the National Assembly have called on the government to resolve the crisis. Members of parliament from the Nepali Congress and the National People’s Front have urged for greater transparency and improved management regarding the import, sale, and distribution of cooking gas. Legislators questioned why consumers continue to face difficulties obtaining gas despite government claims that imports from India exceed domestic demand, with some describing the situation as an “artificial shortage” that has caused significant public hardship.
