Netanyahu administration media monitoring security breach

Overview

A security vulnerability involving an AI-driven media monitoring system used by Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration was first identified after its source code was left publicly accessible on GitHub. The system, utilized by senior aide Yonatan Urich to track news regarding the Prime Minister and Sara Netanyahu, reportedly scanned approximately 50 news sources every 90 seconds to provide real-time WhatsApp notifications.

Following the exposure, Urich confirmed that his WhatsApp account had been hacked. The leaked correspondence, verified by Haaretz, revealed strategic communications between Urich and prominent media figures, such as Channel 12’s Amit Segal, regarding campaign messaging and planned speeches. Reports suggest the breach may have originated from the AI-driven service, which was linked to an external provider in the United Arab Emirates and reportedly provided access to unencrypted messages. Urich has stated his intention to pursue legal action against those responsible for the breach and the distribution of the private content.
