NetApp acquisition of PEAK:AIO and Novus AI architecture
Overview
NetApp has announced its intention to acquire PEAK:AIO, a Manchester-based software-defined storage company. The acquisition is designed to bolster NetApp’s artificial intelligence infrastructure strategy by addressing the performance and scalability requirements of large-scale AI environments and expanding GPU clusters.
PEAK:AIO specializes in high-performance parallel file systems and advanced metadata management. By integrating this technology into the NetApp ONTAP platform, the company aims to disaggregate metadata from data, allowing both layers to scale independently. This architecture is intended to prevent metadata services from becoming bottlenecks that could leave computing equipment idle.
Following these developments, NetApp unveiled Novus, a storage architecture designed to support large-scale AI factory operations. Targeting AI infrastructure providers, such as neocloud and GPU-as-a-Service companies, Novus aims for an aggregate throughput exceeding 100 TB per second to prevent GPU underutilization. The architecture utilizes an approach that separates metadata management from the data path, allowing performance, capacity, and concurrency to scale independently within a single namespace via the NFS protocol.
In its initial phase, Novus integrates the NetApp Novus Data Director on qualified Supermicro infrastructure with NetApp ONTAP data services via the AFF A90 system. NetApp also introduced new hybrid multi-cloud capabilities, including NetApp Keystone Sovereign to support data sovereignty compliance in the European Economic Area, and NetApp Console Autonomous Operations to reduce reactive workloads through automation.
