Netherlands fuel prices reach record highs

Rising fuel prices in the Netherlands have reached record levels, with the advisory price for gasoline hitting approximately 2.668 euros per liter. This surpasses the previous record of 2.646 euros set in early May. The surge is attributed to global market volatility, specifically escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, including U.S. strikes on Iranian missile launch sites and the resulting impact on oil tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

Research by the motorists' association ANWB indicates that these costs are forcing significant budgetary adjustments among Dutch households. Approximately 30 percent of respondents report spending less on groceries, 43 percent are eating out less frequently, and 40 percent are reducing vacation budgets. The financial strain is most acute for lower-income households; among those earning below the median income, 39 percent state that high prices have a ‘major impact’ on their finances, while 28 percent report facing ‘genuine economic difficulties.’

To mitigate costs, about one-third of motorists report cycling more often, and over 20 percent have reduced leisure driving. Beyond Middle Eastern unrest, the ANWB also attributes price increases to Dutch tax policy, specifically the automatic inflation-indexing of fuel taxes. Energy experts suggest that prices may not drop in the near term, as global supply shortages caused by Middle Eastern instability could take months to resolve.
