Netherlands regional bridge infrastructure projects

Infrastructure maintenance and renewal projects are underway in the Netherlands, impacting regional mobility and logistics.

In the Drechtsteden region, stakeholders including Rijkswaterstaat and local municipalities are coordinating to manage accessibility during a six-week closure of the Papendrechtsebrug. To mitigate delays that can reach 60 minutes during peak periods, the region is utilizing temporary ferry connections and increased rail and bicycle use.

Concurrently, Rijkswaterstaat has initiated the third tender process for the renewal of the Van Brienenoordbrug in Rotterdam. The project involves replacing the bridge’s western arch. To minimize disruption, a new arch will be constructed at a specialized ‘circular shipyard’ on Duivelseiland in Dordrecht. This site requires a 5.6 million euro investment for soil remediation and ground improvement through 2028. The phased construction plan involves transporting the new arch to Rotterdam in 2030, with the full replacement of both arches scheduled between 2028 and 2033.
