Netherlands youth healthcare and residential support
Overview
In the Netherlands, initiatives are underway to address deficiencies in healthcare and residential support for young people with complex needs. A specialized hospice has been established to provide care for young adults aged 16 to 40, filling a gap that occurs when patients transition from pediatric to adult wards at age 18.
To complement these efforts, the Dutch government is working with municipalities to reform youth residential care. The government aims to move away from expensive, one-on-one placements in unsuitable settings, such as holiday parks, in favor of localized care. To support this transition, 77 million euros will be allocated over the next two years to fund regional expert teams and certified institutions, with the goal of allowing youth to remain in their own regions and return home quickly when residential care is required.
