New cardiovascular health guidance for women

Overview

Major health organizations, including the American Heart Association, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, have released a joint publication to redefine heart health for girls and women. Through three manuscripts published in the journal Circulation, the organizations introduced a “Female Life Stage” framework to address fragmented healthcare by connecting clinical specialties.

The guidance emphasizes a holistic approach that begins as early as adolescence, identifying menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause as critical windows for risk detection and treatment. The initiative aims to connect hormonal health, mental well-being, and heart function to improve long-term outcomes. Research highlights that hormonal fluctuations involving estrogen, estradiol, and progesterone significantly impact blood vessel cells, cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and inflammatory processes.

Experts note that while cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death for women, only four in ten women recognize it as a major health threat. Dr. Sadiya Khan, lead author and professor at Northwestern University, noted that women’s healthcare is often fragmented across different specialties. In addition to clinical frameworks, the societies are advocating for a national network of Comprehensive Centers of Excellence for Women’s Cardiovascular Care. Medical experts also highlighted the need to recognize non-traditional symptoms, such as extreme fatigue, nausea, or anxiety, and warned against “silent lights” like high blood pressure and cholesterol that may cause damage without perceptible symptoms.
