New York City fatal hit-and-run incidents

Overview

A series of fatal hit-and-run accidents in New York City has led to increased public outcry and calls for road safety reforms.

On August 18 and 19, two separate incidents resulted in the deaths of Paulina Pec, 29, in Brooklyn, and Angelo Camero, 51, in the Bronx. Both drivers fled the scenes following the collisions.

By August 26, the death toll rose to four following additional fatalities involving Mamadou Diallo, 40, in Brooklyn and Destiny Murrell, 22, in the West Village. In response to these deaths, which included three cyclists and one pedestrian, protesters staged a ‘die-in’ at City Hall Park to demand a new citywide plan to improve road safety.
