New York lead water pipe replacement initiative

Overview

New York State has launched the Lead Infrastructure Forgiveness and Transformation (LIFT) grant program, a $130 million initiative led by Governor Kathy Hochul to identify and replace lead service lines. The program aims to mitigate public health risks, particularly for children, by addressing lead exposure from corroding pipes and fixtures in older communities.

Several municipalities have been designated as major recipients of the funding. These include New York City, which received $14 million for Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island, as well as Poughkeepsie, Rochester, and Port Jervis, each receiving between $13.4 million and $14 million. Other allocations include $11.8 million for Buffalo, $11.1 million for Troy, and $8.9 million for Kingston.
