New York state income tax reform debate

Overview

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman proposed a $35 billion tax-cut plan designed to eliminate state income taxes for single filers earning up to $50,000 and married couples earning up to $100,000. Blakeman stated the plan would remove income taxes for households in 45 of New York’s 62 counties to address the high cost of living. Governor Kathy Hochul’s campaign dismissed the proposal as “half baked”.

Following the proposal, a poll by the Empire Center for Public Policy found that 64% of registered New York voters support abolishing the state income tax. The survey showed that 67% of respondents feel they do not receive “good value for the tax dollars they pay”. Support for the abolition of the tax was recorded across various demographics, including 88% of Republicans, 64% of unaffiliated voters, and 51% of Democrats.
