New Zealand domestic response to Israel-Palestine conflict

New Zealand's foreign policy and government response to Israeli settlement activity and the conflict in Gaza have faced increasing domestic criticism.

In late August 2026, the Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa criticized the government for failing to sign a joint statement with 22 other nations condemning Israeli construction plans in the E1 area of the Occupied West Bank. While Prime Minister Christopher Luxon expressed condemnation of the plans, the lack of a formal signature on the multilateral statement was described by spokesperson Rinad Tamimi as a ‘moral collapse’ in foreign policy.

By early September 2026, pro-Palestine activists intensified their pressure through continuous protests. Demonstrators called for the New Zealand government to impose sanctions on Israel and end visa-free entry for members of the Israeli military and reserves. The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) campaign also targeted local entities, such as the Auckland Council, as activists criticized the coalition government for what they characterized as a weak response to the situation.
