New Zealand NPC rugby season progression

Overview

The New Zealand National Provincial Championship (NPC) progressed through its regular season and knockout stages. During the ninth round, the standings were highly competitive, with Northland, Otago, and Hawke’s Bay tied at 32 points, while Tasman and Bay of Plenty competed for final quarter-final positions. The return of All Blacks such as Noah Hotham, Timoci Tavatavanawai, and David Havili for Tasman, and Emoni Narawa for Bay of Plenty, was expected to impact these contests. Additionally, Northland prepared for a third Ranfurly Shield defense against Counties Manukau.

As the regular season moved toward its final round, fourteen All Blacks players were released to represent their respective provincial unions. A significant development included the return of veteran Beauden Barrett to Taranaki for the first time since 2020, occurring amidst national selection preparations for the upcoming Bledisloe Cup. Barrett faced competition for playmaker positions from players including Damian McKenzie, Richie Mo’unga, Ruben Love, and Josh Jacomb.

Following the regular season, Canterbury secured a place in the NPC final after defeating Taranaki 38-28 in Christchurch. Despite a Taranaki comeback attempt featuring tries from Meihana Grindlay and Kaylum Boshier, Canterbury’s halftime lead proved decisive.

In the championship final held at Te Kaha Stadium in Christchurch, Canterbury secured their 16th NPC title with a 43-24 victory over Northland. Although Northland led 21-10 at halftime following tries from Heremaia Murray, Jordan Trainor, and Corey Evans, Canterbury staged a second-half comeback fueled by five tries. George Bell and Isaac Hutchinson each scored twice, while Dom Gardiner, Brodie McAlister, and Tyson Belworthy also scored. The victory brings Canterbury just one title behind Auckland’s record for most NPC crowns.
