New Zealand’s international tourism sector is showing a significant recovery, with visitor arrivals in June 2026 reaching 201,900. This figure represents 95 per cent of the levels recorded in June 2019 and marks an 8.1 per cent increase compared to June 2025. For the year ending June 2026, the country welcomed a total of 3,674,600 overseas visitors, a 9 per cent increase over the previous year. Growth is being driven largely by Australia, which saw 108,200 arrivals (up 14 per cent), and China, which saw 14,300 arrivals (up 27 per cent). This upward trend in arrivals has occurred despite a 1.7 per cent decline in global air passenger demand reported by the International Air Transport Association. Economic indicators show strengthening visitor spending, with the median spend rising to $2,248 and daily spend increasing by 8 per cent to $309. This momentum is also fueling interest in the business-for-sale market, particularly in accommodation, hospitality, and adventure operations. The sector remains New Zealand’s second-largest export earner, supporting government objectives to double the value of tourism exports by 2034. Recent trends in the region indicate a shift toward immersive and luxury travel experiences. In New Zealand, high-end accommodations such as Rosewood Matakauri and Kinloch Manor & Villas are offering incentives, including complimentary night offers, for the 2026 and 2027 seasons. Travel providers are increasingly focusing on itineraries that offer deeper connections to local landscapes and culture, such as overnight stays at Milford Sound to view Fiordland National Park away from daytime crowds.
