Newnan police shooting investigation

On October 3, 2026, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) launched an investigation into a fatal officer-involved shooting in Newnan, Georgia. According to preliminary reports, a Newnan Police Department officer pursued 18-year-old Zadarious Dorsey following a vehicle stop. After an unsuccessful attempt to use a taser, the officer reported that Dorsey pulled a gun from his waistband. The officer shot Dorsey multiple times, and he later died at a local hospital.

By October 8, Dorsey’s family met with Coweta Judicial Circuit District Attorney Herb Cranford to review evidence, including body camera footage, surveillance video, and police radio traffic. While the family agreed to the release of body camera footage up to the moment of the shooting, they requested that footage depicting Dorsey’s suffering be withheld from the public.

Reports noted that Dorsey had prior felony charges related to an alleged sexual assault. In response to the incident, protesters gathered outside the Newnan Police Department on October 9 to hold a moment of silence and demand transparency. Local officials have urged the public to wait for the official investigation results.
