NFL international expansion efforts

The NFL is pursuing a global expansion strategy, with Commissioner Roger Goodell expressing “no doubt” that international franchises will eventually be established outside the United States. While a timeline for permanent teams remains uncertain—with Goodell suggesting such a move could be more than a decade away—the league is aggressively increasing its international footprint through regular-season games.

The 2026 season is set to feature a record nine international games across four continents and seven countries, including Melbourne, Australia; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; London, England; Paris, France; Madrid, Spain; Munich, Germany; and Mexico City, Mexico. Specifically, Mexico City is scheduled to host games at Banorte Stadium from 2026 through 2028, including a matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and the Minnesota Vikings on November 22, 2026.

As the league identifies new markets, cities like Toronto and Berlin have emerged as potential destinations. Berlin has seen high public enthusiasm leading to scheduled games in 2027 and 2029, while Melbourne is slated to host a debut game between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers. To support this growth, the league is investing in talent development through the UK-based NFL Academy, which helps international players secure opportunities in U.S. collegiate football.

While officials note that hosting games is distinct from establishing permanent overseas franchises, Goodell indicated that international cities could eventually host the Super Bowl, though the league prefers to establish permanent teams in those locations first. Some players and coaches have expressed concerns regarding the logistical challenges and travel demands of an international schedule.
