NFL player neurological health research
Overview
A study published in JAMA Network Open by Boston University researchers estimates that approximately 74.5% of deceased former NFL players showed signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). The research, which analyzed data from donated brains and death records, noted that while 93.5% of donated brains showed signs of the disease, researchers adjusted for selection bias to reach the broader estimate.
The study also estimated that roughly 27% of former players had dementia during their lifetime. The NFL Players Association described the findings as “critical” to understanding the long term impacts of the sport, while the NFL stated it is committed to implementing strategies to reduce concussions and head impacts.
Further reports have connected professional football to other neurological conditions, including Parkinson’s disease. Recent cases include former running back Marshall Faulk, who has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s, and the death of former Los Angeles Rams running back Lawrence McCutcheon following a battle with the same condition. Additionally, player Ryan Kelly reported that concussions led to the end of his professional career.
