Nicaragua-China emergency monitoring center inauguration
Overview
Nicaragua has inaugurated the Centro Momotombo de Monitoreo, Alerta y Respuesta in Managua, a 4,000-square-meter seismic-resistant facility designed to strengthen the nation’s ability to monitor natural phenomena and respond to emergencies. Developed with support from the People’s Republic of China, the center is part of the National Emergency Response System (SINAREM) and is intended to assist agencies like SINAPRED and INETER in issuing early warnings for earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, hurricanes, and floods.
The project involves a $42 million investment and includes the deployment of 89 seismic stations, 25 volcanic surveillance stations, and various meteorological, hydrological, and satellite technologies, as well as drones and rescue robots.
While the government presents the facility as an advanced emergency management tool, some security experts suggest the center may deepen Nicaragua’s technological and political dependence on China. Critics have also raised concerns that the center’s surveillance capabilities could be utilized for internal control and external intelligence.
