Nicaragua‑Russia partnership expansion
Overview
In May 2026 Nicaragua’s Ortega government formalised a deepening military alliance with Russia, ratifying a bilateral cooperation agreement that created legal frameworks for joint training, information exchange, counter‑terrorism and anti‑piracy operations. A presidential decree later authorised Russian (and other foreign) troops, ships and aircraft to be stationed in Nicaragua from July to December 2026, citing humanitarian assistance and maritime‑security training.
By early June the partnership broadened beyond defence. At the International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg, Nicaragua announced expanded health cooperation with Russia, including joint work on influenza, HPV, dengue and cancer vaccine trials, and sought observer status in the Eurasian Economic Union. The same forum saw delegations from several Latin American nations, including Nicaragua, sign memoranda on energy, agriculture, technology and defense, aiming to reduce reliance on the US dollar.
Later in June Nicaraguan officials signed a suite of bilateral agreements with Russia in St. Petersburg, covering city‑friendship ties, bio‑security, extradition and the transfer of convicted prisoners. These accords cemented cooperation across health, security, scientific research and legal matters, underscoring an increasingly multifaceted Nicaragua‑Russia relationship throughout the month.
