Niclas Füllkrug resurgence at Werder Bremen

Niclas Füllkrug has experienced a career revitalization following his return to Werder Bremen after playing in England and Italy. His recent performances have been central to the club’s success in the Bundesliga. In a match against Borussia Dortmund, Füllkrug scored a stoppage-time header to secure a 2-2 draw, extending his scoring streak to four consecutive matches. This performance led DFB Sporting Director Rudi Völler to suggest a potential return to the German national team. The match also featured a moment where Füllkrug fulfilled a birthday wish for Werder bus driver Andreas Graßmann, who had predicted a goal in the 92nd minute. Füllkrug’s form has helped Werder Bremen achieve a series of comebacks, making them the first Bundesliga team to earn points after trailing by two goals in three consecutive matches. This surge has moved the club to eighth place in the standings. However, the team’s tactical focus on Füllkrug has limited the playing time of teammate Cedric Itten.

Füllkrug, currently on loan from West Ham United, recently led Werder Bremen to a 3-2 away victory against FSV Mainz 05 by scoring two penalties. This performance marked his sixth consecutive Bundesliga match with at least one goal, bringing him close to Rudi Völler’s club record of seven consecutive scoring games set during the 1982/83 season. With eight goals this season, the 33-year-old striker currently sits at the top of the Bundesliga scoring charts. Following the victory over Mainz 05, which moved Werder Bremen up to sixth place, Füllkrug addressed recent comments from Germany coach Jürgen Klopp regarding his age. He stated that he plays for his club rather than for national team call-ups. Since his return to Bremen, Füllkrug has recorded eight goals in seven appearances.
