Nicotine product use and metabolic disease risks

Overview

Recent scientific studies have identified correlations between various nicotine delivery methods and increased risks of metabolic disorders.

An international study involving approximately 2.8 million people found that exclusive e-cigarette users face a 34 percent higher risk of developing prediabetes compared to non-users. The research, published in ‘Internal and Emergency Medicine’, also noted a 37 percent increase in insulin resistance among e-cigarette users and a 26 percent increased risk for those combining e-cigarettes with traditional cigarettes.

In a separate 4.8-year tracking study of 29,000 non-diabetic workers, researchers found that users of heated tobacco products face a 1.61 times higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to non-smokers. Those using both heated tobacco and traditional cigarettes showed a 1.76 times higher risk, while traditional cigarette smokers showed a 1.53 times higher risk.
