Niger Bridge maintenance and reopening

Overview

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) initially raised concerns regarding the Niger Bridge demarcation project, urging the Federal Ministry of Works to develop enhanced emergency and traffic management plans. Officials warned that the project could create traffic vulnerabilities and hinder emergency recovery operations.

Following a period of closure starting September 7 for emergency maintenance and structural repairs, the Nigerian federal government has reopened the First Niger Bridge, which connects Onitsha to Asaba. Minister of Works Dave Umahi reported that the rehabilitation included repairing damaged components, improving road markings, installing solar-powered streetlights, and adding CCTV cameras. While the bridge is open to traffic, Umahi noted that the work is not “100 per cent complete.”
