Niger Delta economic diversification efforts

Discussions regarding the economic future of the Niger Delta have focused on transitioning the region away from oil dependence toward sustainable development. The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has advocated for economic diversification, specifically identifying agriculture as a vital sector for food security and employment. NDDC Managing Director Dr. Samuel Ogbuku emphasized that controlling production data is essential for resource control, stating, “If we do not control the data, we do not know what we produce; we do not know what is to come to us.”

At the inaugural Niger Delta Economic and Investment Summit, stakeholders highlighted a significant gap between the region's wealth and its development levels. Estimates suggest the region has received approximately $160 billion in federal allocations over the last 27 years, yet approximately 48 per cent of the population remains multidimensionally poor. Leaders have called for a shift from raw-material extraction toward a hub for production, processing, and logistics to improve living standards and accountability.

Building on these objectives, stakeholders recently convened at the 2026 NDDC Partners for Sustainable Development Conference in Port Harcourt to discuss the commission’s 2027 budget proposal and regional priorities. During the meeting, Minister of Regional Development Abubakar Momoh urged regional commissions to develop master plans that could be integrated into a “unified regional development compass.” He noted that the Federal Government is developing a new policy framework to coordinate regional initiatives and promote inclusive growth. NDDC Chairman Chiedu Ebie and Managing Director Samuel Ogbuku reiterated that sustained stakeholder engagement is vital for addressing community needs.
