Nigeria 2026 budget spending scrutiny

In late July 2026, civic‑technology groups began flagging the scale and opacity of Nigeria’s federal budget. Tracka, an initiative of BudgIT, highlighted a N962.83 billion allocation for 39 sport‑utility vehicles and 2,579 empowerment projects, noting that only a handful of these projects have clearly identified implementation sites and that many implementing agencies lack statutory mandates. The organisation warned that such poorly defined programmes could become avenues for wasteful spending and political patronage amid a fiscal deficit reliant on borrowing.

The following day, reporting on the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) showed another slice of the same budget. NBAIS earmarked about ₦18 billion—roughly two‑thirds of its ₦26.47 billion allocation—for personnel costs, with the remainder covering overheads, capital projects and a range of infrastructure and social programmes across several states. Detailed line items included road constructions, factory subsidies, security outposts, rice distribution, empowerment cash grants and solar‑powered streetlights. The lack of official comment and the detailed, yet still opaque, breakdown reinforced concerns about transparency and fiscal discipline across the broader 2026 appropriations.
