Nigeria agriculture security challenges

Entities: Nura Umar Abdullahi · Bungudu Local Government Area · Alhaji Bello Umar · Zamfara State · Operation FANSAN YAMMA

Overview

In late June, youth members of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) in the South‑West warned that rising insecurity – kidnappings, farm attacks and herder clashes – was jeopardising food production and rural livelihoods, urging President Bola Tinubu and the six South‑West governors to deploy specialised agro‑ranger units, drones, community‑intelligence systems and to improve mechanisation, digital hubs and livestock management.

By late July, northern leaders responded. The Emir of Zuru praised Kebbi Governor Dr Nasir Idris for a large‑scale free distribution of farming inputs and called for a transparent oversight committee. In Niger State, Governor Mohammed Bago met traditional rulers, urging Fulani community leaders to cooperate with security forces to curb kidnappings and banditry, and ordered farmers to avoid planting near government infrastructure while regulating vigilante activity.

On 25 July, heavily‑armed bandits stormed the residence of Bungudu Local Government Area Chairman Nura Umar Abdullahi in Zamfara, killing two police officers, two vigilantes and a civilian, and abducting the chairman and members of his family. Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA rescued five relatives; the chairman’s elder brother was injured. Residents have called for intensified security, and Defence Minister Mohammed Bello Matawalle ordered expanded offensive operations. A coordinated search‑and‑rescue involving the army, police, the Department of State Services and local vigilantes continues, underscoring the link between insecurity and threats to agricultural production.
