To bolster the financial sustainability of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) amid increasing demand, the Federal Executive Council approved the transfer of liquid funds recovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to the scheme. This directive specifically excludes seized properties, non-liquid assets, or funds subject to legal disputes. Additionally, the council approved the transfer of unclaimed dividends from the Capital Market Trust Fund and the Dormant Account Trust Fund to NELFUND, with unclaimed dividends estimated at approximately N242 billion. Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa stated these measures are intended to ensure the agency can meet its growing obligations to Nigerian students. As of August 2026, NELFUND has reported disbursing over ₦322 billion through more than 1.6 million applications.
