Overview

Nigeria is pursuing strategic international partnerships to develop a self-reliant and indigenous defence industrial base.

In mid-August, a high-level Nigerian delegation led by Minister of State for Defence Bello Muhammed Matawalle visited Egypt to study manufacturing processes and explore technology transfer opportunities. The mission focused on establishing sustainable industrial partnerships, particularly through the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), to facilitate the joint manufacture of military equipment rather than simple procurement.

By late August, Minister of Defence General Christopher Musa reinforced this objective at a defence industry forum in Abuja, noting that the DICON Act 2023 provides the legal framework for private-sector investment and international collaboration. Musa expressed the ambition to transition Nigeria from a buyer of foreign goods to a competitive African manufacturing hub through research, development, and local production.
