Nigeria Democratic Congress 2027 election preparations

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has begun mobilizing for the 2027 general elections. In the Federal Capital Territory, the party’s South-East chapter announced a goal to secure one million votes for the presidential ticket featuring Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, aiming to unite South-East residents in Abuja under the NDC platform.

Expanding its national strategy, the NDC reported that it has nominated governorship candidates for all 28 states holding elections in 2027, dismissing claims that it lacked candidates in certain regions as “false and malicious propaganda.” However, the party also faced political violence in Rivers State, where an attack on the Emohua Local Government Area secretariat resulted in the destruction of billboards and campaign materials.

As election preparations continue, the NDC has denied allegations of favoritism and illegal payments regarding its candidate selection process. The party maintains that all funds from aspirants and members are documented and will be reported to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). This follows broader political scrutiny in Nigeria, where the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has challenged the administration to disclose the identities of 3.29 million beneficiaries of a N33.75 billion cash-transfer programme following reports of potential fictitious payments. Additionally, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has criticized the federal government’s domestic borrowing, which reached N24.7 trillion between January and August 2026, arguing it harms the economy by starving private businesses of credit.
