Nigeria #EndSARS movement anniversary

Overview

On the sixth anniversary of the #EndSARS protests, commemorations in Nigeria have been met with police intervention. In Lagos, officers used tear gas to disperse a memorial gathering organized by the Enough is Enough movement at the Lekki Toll Gate, preventing a planned wreath-laying ceremony for victims of the 2020 shootings.

Demands for accountability persist, with the Youth Rights Campaign calling for the prosecution of senior officials, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and retired Lieutenant-General Tukur Buratai. Political figures have also criticized the government for a lack of transparency regarding the use of force during the original protests.

Public discourse surrounding the anniversary also highlights broader national concerns. Actor Debo Adedayo, known as Mr Macaroni, noted that six years later, the country continues to face insecurity, hunger, poverty, and corruption. The movement, which originally targeted the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), remains a focal point for discussions on human rights and the socio-economic state of the nation.
