Nigeria Enugu Air runway excursion investigation update

Overview

On 23 July 2026, an Enugu Air Embraer E170 (Flight 4264) traveling from Lagos overshot the runway at Benin Airport in Edo State. The aircraft veered off Runway 05, striking approach-lighting installations and two decommissioned concrete structures before coming to rest on a grassy area. All 63 passengers and five crew members were evacuated without injury. Enugu Air CEO Tolu Ita noted that the grassy runoff helped prevent a more serious accident.

On 21 August 2026, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) released a preliminary report. Investigators found that although Air Traffic Control (ATC) had advised the crew that the approach to Runway 23 appeared better and warned that Runway 05 was wet due to rain, the crew proceeded with the approach to Runway 05.

The NSIB identified several infrastructure and safety concerns, including unserviceable meteorological information display equipment and an uncompleted building that obstructed the controller’s line of sight to the end of the runway. In response, the bureau issued four immediate safety recommendations to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.
