Nigeria has initiated a series of strategic efforts to overhaul its homeland security framework. In late July 2026, Major General Adeyinka Famadewa, the special adviser to President Bola Tinubu on homeland security, established four priority initiatives: a Unified Surveillance Programme, strengthened identity management, enhanced border security, and improved early-warning and rapid response mechanisms. Following these priorities, the Federal Government inaugurated a presidential committee in August 2026 to develop a National Threat Assessment and a rolling Five-Year Strategic Defence Operations Plan. Inaugurated by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, the committee is tasked with producing these documents within a 90-day deadline.
