Overview
In August 2026 the Nigerian army stepped up its campaign against the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Borno’s Lake Chad region. After seizing electronic devices during recent combat, forensic analysis identified senior ISWAP commanders – governor Abu Musa Al‑Mangawi Baa Shuwa, deputy Muhammad Jidda (“The One‑Handed Man”) and field commander Hamad Abu Hanifa – and placed them on a wanted list. A premature explosion that killed five ISWAP operatives, including bomb‑making experts, was reported as a setback to the group’s IED network.
Later the same day, the Joint Task Force announced a total bounty of N60 million for information leading to the capture of those leaders, offering N50 million for the governor and N10 million for the deputy, with a smaller reward for the Amirul‑Fiya. The bounty announcement followed the intelligence breakthrough and aimed to encourage public tips to further degrade ISWAP’s command structure.
