The joint port‑task force launched in late June 2026 continues to deepen digital reforms. After reporting a 6.18‑day vessel turnaround and 57.4 % berth occupancy in early July, the task force introduced scheduled batch releases of trucks and secured 5 % government funding for the $726 million port rehabilitation. On 21 July, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) began a pilot of its Management Information System and Electronic Cargo Tracking System (ECTS) at Lagos’s PTML Area Command. Officials said the platforms, which already enable two‑hour cargo clearance, are intended Command, aiming to halve that time two‑hour cargo‑clearance times to one hour. A week later, on 28 July, PTML became the second pilot site for the ECTS after a successful rollout at the Apapa command. At a stakeholder sensitisation workshop, Comptroller Nura Miko urged partners to adopt the GPS‑based system, which replaces physical escorting of cargo and generates real‑time alerts for route deviations, seal tampering or unauthorised stops. Deputy Comptroller Regina Owan highlighted the technology’s role in safeguarding cargo integrity, reducing logistics costs, and boosting revenue collection. At the closing ceremony of the 2026 NCS Public Relations Conference in Port Harcourt, the service officials praised anti‑smuggling successes and urged its officers to adopt proactive, research‑driven communication to strengthen public trust. The event honoured Comptroller‑General Adewale Adeniyi with a Lifetime Achievement Award and highlighted recent anti‑smuggling successes, including seizures of unauthorised pharmaceuticals worth N3.04 billion, thousands of firearms, over 14,000 cannabis parcels, large volumes of petroleum products and undeclared foreign currency. Together, the task force’s enforcement actions, the rollout of electronic clearance tools, and the renewed communication strategy aim to sustain the logistics gains achieved earlier in the month and further improve Nigeria’s port performance.
