Nigeria security and displacement strategy

Nigeria is pursuing new strategic frameworks and coordinated national and international responses to address evolving security threats and large-scale internal displacement.

Initially, the Ministry of Defence focused on developing new security architectures to improve inter-agency coordination. Proposals included the North-Central Integrated Security and Resilience Model (NCISRM), which aimed to transition from agency-centric to system-centric security through intelligence fusion, technological advancements, and community participation involving traditional rulers and local networks.

Efforts have since expanded to include calls for integrated strategies that address the root causes of conflict, such as climate variability and competition over land and water resources. These issues have contributed to significant displacement, with millions of internally displaced persons reported across the North-East, North-Central, and North-West regions.

To combat these multidimensional threats, the administration under President Bola Tinubu is implementing measures such as recruiting 22,000 additional military personnel, reorganizing army structures, and seeking stronger global partnerships to address security challenges within Nigeria and the wider Sahel region.
