Nigeria Super Eagles AFCON qualifying milestones

Overview

During an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Madagascar in Uyo, the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, secured a 2-1 comeback victory.

The match was marked by several individual milestones. Moses Simon earned his 100th cap for Nigeria, becoming only the fifth player in the nation’s history to reach that mark.

Additionally, the fixture saw significant debuts. George Ilenikhena scored an equalizer, and Moses Usor, entering as a substitute, scored the winning goal. Usor set a new record as the fastest Nigerian player to score on a competitive senior international debut after coming off the bench, surpassing the previous record of 18 minutes held by Akor Adams. Usor and Ilenikhena became the first pair of players to score on their Super Eagles debuts in the same match.

In this opening 2027 AFCON qualifier, Madagascar took an early lead in the 16th minute through Ehsan Kari. Nigeria responded in first-half injury time via Ilenikhena, before Usor secured the win in the second half with a solo effort. Following the match, Usor, who plays for LASK in Austria, expressed a desire to emulate the consistency and commitment of Simon. Nigeria now prepares for their next Group L fixture against Guinea-Bissau.
