Overview
Nigeria’s telecommunications sector is experiencing growth and infrastructure expansion. In July 2026, total active mobile subscriptions reached approximately 195.11 million, an increase of 2.88 million from the previous month. This recovery follows a period of contraction in 2024 linked to the enforcement of linking telephone numbers to National Identification Numbers.
MTN Nigeria has emerged as a dominant player, becoming the first operator in the country to surpass 100 million subscribers, holding a 51.76 per cent market share. Other major operators include Airtel with 34.26 per cent and Globacom with 12.13 per cent.
Regarding infrastructure, mobile network operators have deployed 8,526 out of 12,179 committed coverage and capacity sites, representing roughly 70 per cent of their total commitments. Despite this progress, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) noted that network reliability remains challenged by frequent fibre optic cuts, which contributed to service outages in June.
