Nigeria tertiary education ranking initiative
Overview
The Nigerian Federal Government has initiated a national ranking exercise for all tertiary institutions, including universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. Announced by Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa, the policy aims to enhance quality, accountability, and global competitiveness within the sector as part of President Bola Tinubu’s education reforms.
Following the initial mandate, the Nigerian Tertiary Education Ranking Advisory Committee (NiTERAC) began coordinating the process. The ranking for universities will utilize 22 specific performance indicators, with weightings developed alongside the League of Directors of Academic Planning. NiTERAC Chairman Prof. Peter Okebukola stated that the ranking process for all three sub-sectors is expected to be completed by December 15, 2026.
