Nigeria-US law enforcement cooperation on sextortion

Overview

The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) commended Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for its involvement in Operation Artemis. This joint international investigation targeted criminal networks engaged in the sexual exploitation and extortion of minors.

The operation led to the arrest and extradition of two Nigerian suspects, Adebola Adekunle and Mudasiru Olawale, in August 2026. Both individuals are currently facing federal charges in the United States.

President Bola Tinubu praised the EFCC following the recognition from FBI Director Kash Patel, stating that the collaboration reflects progress in combating financial crimes. The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring Nigeria does not become a haven for criminals and pledged continued support for anti-corruption institutions.
