Nigeria water security and infrastructure initiatives

Overview

Nigeria is implementing various initiatives to improve water security and infrastructure through solar technology and policy development.

In Gombe State, the Nigerian Navy inaugurated a solar-powered water supply project at the Cottage Hospital in the Pindiga community. This project, part of the Special Intervention Quick Impact Projects initiative, includes a solar-powered borehole and storage tanks to address local water shortages and strengthen civil-military cooperation.

On a broader scale, the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has demonstrated solar-powered irrigation systems in Kano State to support dry-season farming and climate resilience. Additionally, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, has proposed classifying water security as a matter of national security. The ministry is currently developing a National Water Compact for 2026–2030 to focus on safe water access, irrigation expansion, and regional water diplomacy.
