Nigerian agricultural modernization and development

Efforts to modernize Nigeria’s agricultural sector have focused on adopting international management models and improving domestic infrastructure. In late August 2026, representatives from the Nigerian cooperative Gondal Fulbe Development Initiative (GFDI) visited Brazil to study the Sistema FAEP Technical and Managerial Assistance (ATeG) model. The delegation sought to use the Brazilian system as a reference to support small-scale milk producers in Adamawa State.

By early September 2026, Nigerian officials shifted focus toward broader systemic reforms at the Africa Food Systems Forum in Rwanda. Mohammed Ibrahim of the National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF) advocated for a new financial architecture to reduce resource fragmentation and attract private investment. Simultaneously, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Senator Abubakar Kyari called for the passage of the Agricultural Extension Services Revitalisation Bill to modernize farmer support. The government also highlighted mechanization initiatives, including the training of 4,000 operators and the deployment of thousands of tractors and implements through a service-provider model.
