Nigerian judicial responses to kidnapping and terrorism

Overview

Nigerian courts and the Department of State Services (DSS) have issued several high-profile sentences related to kidnapping, homicide, and terrorism.

In late September 2026, a conviction in Sokoto State resulted in a death sentence for Ibrahim Usman for the 2023 abduction and killing of three individuals. During the same period, the DSS arraigned four suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), on terrorism and kidnapping charges following the murder of a DSS operative. Additionally, a pastor in Anambra State faced charges including murder and abduction.

By October 2026, an Adamawa State High Court sentenced three individuals to death for the February 2025 kidnapping of two Catholic priests. This ruling was noted as the seventh death sentence secured by the DSS that year in connection with various convictions for kidnapping, terrorism, and massacres across the country.
