Nigerian political alliances for 2027 elections

In preparation for the 2027 Nigerian general elections, the OK Movement—a political platform supporting a potential joint ticket between Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso—announced its decision to remain an independent organization. Following a leadership summit in Abuja, the group rejected mergers with external political entities to preserve its grassroots momentum and leadership under founder John Ughulu.

Tensions escalated when the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) officially dissociated itself from a 59-member Presidential Campaign Council established by the OK Movement. NDC National Chairman Senator Cleopas Moses described the council as unauthorized, stating that only official party leadership holds the authority to constitute such structures. The OK Movement responded by asserting its independence, with National Secretary Saadatu Sani characterizing the stance as a ‘misunderstanding of the group’s independence’ and noting the group does not require validation from party individuals to function.

The internal instability within the NDC has deepened. In Enugu State, over 6,000 members defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the NDC’s decision to field ‘unpopular candidates’ as the primary reason. Further complicating the OK Movement’s cohesion, the group’s National Head of Operations, Francis Nnoli, has resigned, citing a growing disconnect between the movement’s grassroots structure and the NDC party apparatus.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has intensified its opposition to Peter Obi. Beyond dismissing NDC predictions regarding his performance, the APC has launched attacks on Obi’s record, claiming that disclosures from the Anambra State government reveal significant external debts and unpaid salaries during his tenure as governor, challenging his image of fiscal prudence.
