Nigerian political tensions surrounding 2027 election

Overview

Political tensions in Nigeria have intensified regarding President Bola Tinubu’s administration and the lead-up to the 2027 presidential election.

Social Democratic Party candidate Adewale Adebayo has criticized the administration for the detention of five men in Borno State who were reportedly held for expressing opposition, such as wearing shirts with the slogan ‘Tinubu Must Go’. Adebayo characterized these detentions as a violation of democratic freedoms. He also questioned Tinubu’s decision to delegate nationwide campaign messaging to party members rather than campaigning personally, suggesting the President is avoiding the public.

Concurrently, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke is facing scrutiny following reports that he has been appointed as the Osun State coordinator for Tinubu’s 2027 campaign. While some officials defend the move as a necessary step to secure withheld local government allocations for the state, other political leaders have called for clarification on the Governor’s loyalty, warning that such alignment could harm the prospects of other political candidates.
