Throughout late 2026, Nigerian security forces conducted extensive operations to combat kidnapping and terrorism, though they faced significant casualties and ongoing challenges. In August, police and military operations yielded numerous rescues. In Kaduna, police rescued 75 individuals from a mountain cave in Birnin Gwari and three others in Makarfi. In Zamfara, the army arrested three suspected arms traffickers and rescued six people following an ambush. In Kogi, a man abducted from the FCT was rescued after five weeks. However, the security situation remained volatile; in Kebbi, a gun battle with bandits on August 10 resulted in the deaths of 10 police officers and two civilians, though 17 suspected bandits were neutralized. In September, operations expanded ~~to include widespread seizures of illegal goods and targeted raids. Police~~ significantly. In the North-West, the Joint Task Force intercepted drug traffickers in Kaduna ~~recovered counterfeit currency~~ and ~~firearms, while operations~~ rescued victims in ~~Oyo and Osun states targeted drug trafficking. In the North-East, Operation HADIN KAI foiled Boko Haram and ISWAP ambushes in Borno and Yobe, destroying insurgent camps and intercepting logistics supplies. By late September, the military reported rescuing over 60 victims and arresting 44 suspects, including the interception of 44 members of terrorist families in Borno. However, the period also saw mass abductions, such as 47 farmers in Niger State and approximately 40 women in Zamfara, alongside the discovery of 28 human remains in Abia State. By October, operations continued with high intensity. Between October 2 and October 8, the Defence Headquarters reported the rescue of at least 50 persons and the neutralization of 36 terrorists. This included foiling an ISWAP assault in Borno and neutralizing 10 Lakurawa terrorists in the North-West. In the South-East, 20 NYSC members were rescued from the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway, and senior ISWAP commander Abdussamad Ohida was neutralized in Ondo State. In mid-October, troops in Kano’s Falgore Forest rescued Alhaji Kabiru Aliyu and recovered ₦10 million in ransom that had been paid by his family.
