Nigerian university tuition fee hike suspensions

Overview

Several Nigerian universities have suspended proposed tuition fee increases following pushback from students and stakeholders.

Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria paused its implementation of higher fees, which would have raised costs to as much as N298,000 for some programs, after the National Association of Nigerian Students labeled the move a “joke taken too far.” The university cited financial pressures, including a N2.5 billion court ruling, as the driver for the hike.

Similarly, Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University in Makurdi announced it would maintain existing fee structures for the 2026/2027 academic session. The Vice-Chancellor noted the decision was made in response to concerns regarding the financial burden on families and the economic difficulties facing parents.
