Nighttime light exposure and cardiac health research
Overview
Research published in the European Heart Journal indicates that nighttime light exposure may cause harmful changes to heart structure and function. Studies involving participants from the UK Biobank utilized wrist-worn sensors to measure nocturnal light levels over a one-week period. Findings suggest that exposure to light levels exceeding 3 lux—comparable to a small nightlight or the glow of three candles a meter away—is linked to cardiac remodeling.
Three years after initial measurements, cardiac magnetic resonance scans revealed that individuals in higher light-exposure groups experienced thickening of the left heart chamber walls, which reduced ventricular space. Specifically, researchers noted heart walls were 1.5% thicker, left ventricular mass was 2.4% larger, and contractile function was 1.9% weaker. Researchers characterized these structural changes as ‘subclinical,’ meaning they may not present immediate symptoms but could lead to significant health issues over time. Follow-up analysis of 73,286 individuals indicated that high nighttime light exposure is associated with significant long-term health risks over an eight-to-ten-year period, including a 33% higher risk of stroke, a 29% higher risk of heart failure, and a 26% higher risk of cardiovascular death.
Recent updates emphasize that excessive screen time before bed can further disrupt sleep cycles due to blue light, which increases alertness. While blue-light blocking glasses are marketed as a solution, the American Academy of Ophthalmology notes they may not be significantly effective. To mitigate risks, experts recommend turning off digital devices one to two hours before sleep, using dark mode settings, or utilizing blackout curtains and warmer lighting tones.
