Nordic regional security and industrial integration

The Nordic Council is undergoing a period of deepening integration, primarily driven by a shifting geopolitical landscape and pressure from Russia. During the 78th Session of the Nordic Council in Helsinki, representatives and prime ministers are addressing ‘Nordic comprehensive security’, covering military defense, energy, digital infrastructure, food supply, and democracy.

A significant portion of the security dialogue focuses on Arctic security, specifically the strategic importance of Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and Åland regarding telecommunications, shipping routes, and critical infrastructure. Additionally, discussions have expanded to include peace mediation to evaluate if a joint Nordic approach can increase the region’s influence in international stability.

Parallel to these political shifts, industrial cooperation is intensifying. The industrial alliance Nordic Compass is scheduled to hold its first summit in Gothenburg following the Helsinki session, signaling a move toward closer economic and industrial ties alongside political and security integration.
