North Macedonia agricultural market regulation
Overview
In late September 2026, North Macedonia initiated efforts to reform its agricultural sector through both legislative proposals and regulatory enforcement.
Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy Borche Serafimovski introduced a draft law designed to regulate agricultural product markets. The legislation aims to reduce uncertainty for farmers by requiring written contracts that pre-determine quantity, quality, price, and payment terms before delivery. The proposal seeks to distribute responsibility more clearly among producers, buyers, and processors to prevent farmers from bearing disproportionate production risks.
Concurrently, the Commission for Protection of Competition conducted inspections at more than 30 buying centers in the municipalities of Gevgelija, Strumica, Krivogaštani, and Resen. These inspections focused on the procurement of apples and peppers to investigate how purchase prices are formed and how procurement conditions are established. Preliminary analysis of the documentation gathered during these inspections has indicated potential regulatory violations, prompting further investigation by the Commission.
