North Macedonia political corruption allegations
Overview
Political tensions in North Macedonia have escalated through a series of mutual accusations between major parties and public figures.
In late October, the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM) accused Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski of protecting a convicted individual known as “Sime.” The opposition party alleged that the individual, who was previously arrested with drugs and weapons, is not serving his sentence and is being used by the VMRO-DPMNE party for intimidation. SDSM called for a formal investigation into the individual's release.
By early November, VMRO-DPMNE shifted focus to allege a conflict of interest involving former President Stevo Pendarovski. The party questioned the financing of a construction project in Skopje involving the wife of a former intelligence director appointed by Pendarovski. Pendarovski denied all allegations, describing them as “nebulous” and a product of political disorientation.
