North Macedonia vehicle fleet and electric mobility
Overview
North Macedonia currently possesses the oldest vehicle fleet in the Balkans, with an average vehicle age of approximately 19.4 to 20 years. While the total number of registered vehicles has increased significantly since 2012, the age of the fleet remains high due to the heavy import of used vehicles from Western Europe.
In response to vehicle aging and fuel price volatility, the government is developing a new regulatory framework and incentive measures to promote electric mobility. This green transition strategy includes a multi-ministerial effort to draft rules for electric vehicles and a pilot project to develop the Skopje–Blace highway as a fully electric, green corridor.
