North Macedonian political debate and EU integration efforts
Overview
North Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski has addressed potential calls for early parliamentary elections. While maintaining that his government holds a mandate until the regularly scheduled elections in April 2028, Mickoski stated that his party, VMRO-DPMNE, is prepared to respond positively if a unified opposition—including coalitions led by DUI, SDSM, and Levica—submits a formal request through the Assembly.
Following these remarks, the political landscape showed varying reactions. The DUI party welcomed the Prime Minister’s stance. Conversely, the SDSM party indicated they would not serve as an “alibi for the government,” suggesting that elections would only take place if the government exhausts its funds.
Recent developments have shifted focus toward EU integration and economic management. Prime Minister Mickoski reported that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the government’s reform efforts as ‘inspiring’, though she noted one ‘key step’ is still required to open the next cluster.
Opposition leaders have criticized the administration's direction. SDSM Vice President Fani Karanfilova Panovska warned that current policies risk isolation, suggesting that reopening negotiated frameworks regarding identity and language could stall the EU process. Additionally, SDSM leader Venko Filipche criticized a planned budget rebalancing, attributing the deficit to poor economic management.
Diplomatic tensions with Bulgaria also persist. Following European Commission advice to restore the path to EU negotiations, Foreign Minister Timcho Mucunski is scheduled to meet with his Bulgarian counterpart. Opposition leaders have questioned the decision to bilateralize these issues, accusing the government of exacerbating relations with Sofia.
